It is a well-documented fact that human error accounts for too many maritime accidents; with fatigue and overexertion being a prominent causal factor.
One of the serious pain-points for crews on board vessels – as well as shore side organisations supporting global fleets – is how to possibly avoid fatigue for all crew members, stay compliant and at same time manage the Rest/Work hours efficiently on board.
At Teekay Tankers we always put safety first and are constantly striving to find new and innovative ways to deliver Operational Excellence. From this, the idea of a real-time, holistic and transparent rest/work hour management system was born.
Teekay Tankers has during the last couple of years worked closely with SeaSolutions on an exciting journey and have co-created the next generation rest/work hour management tool: REST MANAGER. Integrated face recognition features, provide enhanced user interface to deliver a truly proactive compliance experience. The application is now running on 48 of our vessels, giving unprecedented insights and advantages to the crew on board.
The REST MANAGER solution can be delivered as a stand alone version – or as an integrated part of the comprehensive Ship Management system SVM MACK by Solverminds. You can read more about MACK and the integrated solution on the Solverminds webpage:
I believe that this is a huge step forward in managing seafarer fatigue which allows a new proactive rather than the traditional reactive approach.
The Isle of Man Ship Registry did an initial scoping exercise last year to determine if your solution, Rest Manager would meet our current national legislation and I am pleased to confirm that it does.
The Isle of Man Ship Registry would accept your solution for use on Isle of Man registered ships should any of our shipowners or managers wish to trial your solution.
Innovation and technology solutions award
While several dedicated software solutions are currently available in the market, relatively simple to use and allowing for some planning of work and rest hour schedules – these still mainly operate on the basis of actual rest and work hour data being recorded after the fact/via keystrokes. However, a different approach – integrating known technology- makes it much easier for seafarers to register work and rest hour data as it happens; at the same time enabling a truly proactive compliance follow up and overview in real time. Instead of relying on manual data entry at the end of the day, a new onboard app deployed on dedicated Android tablets installed at strategic locations onboard, utilizes face recognition technology; capture of live data will happen as each crew member checks in and out upon starting and stopping their work accordingly. In a collaborative and innovative effort, Teekay Tankers and SeaSolutions have co-created the next generation rest/work management solution REST MANAGER.
